Himalayan Valleys

Himalayan Valleys

Himalayan Valleys

9 days · 8 – 12 travellers · One departure each, April · October

The Essence

Not for the summit. Nine days with one purpose: to make eight-thousand-metre mountains the ordinary view from your window.

About this Journey

What is best about Nepal is kept in the days at the foot of the mountains. Our guide Pasang is Sherpa, twenty-two years on these trails; his most frequent sentence is slowly, slowly — this route is arranged to it.

The Rhythm

Altitude gained gently, plans kept few: one valley, one monastery, one long conversation a day.

The Journey

Chapters of the Journey

Days 1 – 2

Kathmandu Valley · The Old Towns

A courtyard inn in old Patan. At dawn, circle a stupa with the neighbourhood; by day, walk slowly between the woodcarvers and the metal-beaters — the valley once held three royal cities, and the craft still lives in its doorframes and window lattices.

Days 3 – 5

Pokhara · Lake and Mountain

Three nights by Phewa lake, every morning left unscheduled: the snowline lights first, and twenty minutes later the whole ridge is awake. One day on a low terrace path with lunch in a village courtyard; one day with nothing in it at all.

Days 6 – 7

Mustang · The Canyon Behind the Rain

A small aircraft into the Kali Gandaki, landing at the floor of the deepest gorge on earth. Earthen villages, caves cut into the cliffs, and the wind that gets up on time each afternoon. A traditional hot-stone bath at dusk.

Days 8 – 9

Farewell

The last day holds no plans. Pasang asks the question he asks every guest: in these nine days, at which moment did time feel slow?
